As an aid in the selection of a topic I would recommend Points of View. This database guides you from basic categories to specific topics with those categories and provides basic background and points of view for a vast number of topics.

OmniFile: a database for locating articles to support your argument on any topic.
OmniFile Full Text Select is a 100% full-text database and presents full text with every entry from more than 1,600 publications.
This database is a good jumping off point to survey recently published information on any current events or recent developments that you might need for your topic.

Remember whether you are searching any of our databases or even utilizing an Internet search engine (such as Google) the key to successful searching is to utilize these basic search techniques:

Make use of multiple search terms ( elderly, aged, or senior )
Combine terms using and to narrow your search ( exercise and stress and women )
Use "quotes" to force phrase searches ( " global warming" )
Add * to a base to look for all forms of the term ( tattoo*, for tattoos, tattooed, or tattooing )

Welcome to another exciting year of learning adventures here at ENMU-Ruidoso.

I am happy to re-introduce you to a choice of Databases for locating much needed articles for your public speaking topics and research projects. The selection of databases available from Info Trac is capable of providing you with the next generation of features in fulltext article retreival.

The full assortment of general to disapline specific databases can be found at Gale Info Trac Choices (you need only type in your student ID# to access any or all of these resources.

Let's take a look at what you can do with one of them!

includes journals and periodicals covering a wide variety of disciplines, from social science, humanities and politics to medicine, general interest and science.

The default for retrieval in these databases is for full text, but you success in finding what you want lies in defining your search. Remember to:

You have a variery of options for locating and accessing books.

Go get em!..............Illiad (inter library Loan Sysyem). Used in conjunction with a holdings catalog such as World Cat allows you to request that actual books be sent to you from any library any where.

E-books from NetLibrary allows you to read electronic versions of published books online.

Services such as Manybooks.net allow you to download books to your computer or other e-reading device to read at your leasure.

Journals

Can be accessed via name of the magazine or via searches for a specific set of search terms.

Remote access solution for Database access problem!

Some remote users are experiencing a denied access with the databases.
If you are seeing the following message:

This is cookie.htm from the docs subdirectory.
Licensing agreements for these databases require that access be extended only to authorized users. Once you have been validated by this system, a "cookie" is sent to your browser as an ongoing indication of your authorization to access these databases. It will only need to be set once during login.
As you access databases, they may also use cookies. Your ability to use those databases may depend on whether or not you allow those cookies to be set.
To login again, click here.

Please try the following procedure:

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools-->Internet Options-->Privacy tab-->Advanced Privacy settings.
Check these boxes: (1)Override automatic cookie handling,
and "Accept" on (2) First-party and (3) Third-party cookies, and (4) Always allow session cookies.

I am not sure why this is happening with the browsers on some computers and not others but is seems to resolve the problem.

New Resource Profile: History Reference Center

History Reference Center offers full text from more than 2,300 reference books, encyclopedias and non-fiction books, cover to cover full text for more than 130 leading history periodicals, more than 61,100 historical documents, 66,000 biographies of historical figures, more than 110,200 historical photos and maps, and more than 80 hours of historical video. Just search for a topic and then select from the media types listed on the left side of the results page.

This database and many others can be found on our Online Research page and are accessable via your ENMU student ID#.

Thanks to a purchase by the New Mexico State Library a new selection of news magazines as well as three New Mexico Newspapers are now viewable/searchable online.

Also included is a selection of 28 popular news magazines.

You can access any of these publications via any ENMU-Ruidoso Campus computer or via a secret username and password. Countdown of Finals- hit the databases

As the semester wraps up and the activities ramp up now is the time to pull together those resources for the final round of assignments, papers and presentations. With that in mind I have reorganized our list of database for articles within specific disciplines.

From our Online Research Database page you can find full text databases offering content for your specific assignments in:

Arts
Business
Criminal Justice
History; US or World
Hospitality Tourism
Literature
Psychology
Sociology

Remember:

Access to these database resources is via your ENMU ID#.
Make use of a variety search terms.
Control your search results by combining search terms with "and" or capturing phrases "global warming".

Developing a serials collection

With the opening of our expanded facility, we are now looking at developing a collection of journals and magazines for faculty, staff and student use.

Can't escape the feeling that were letting the genie out of bottle, But here goes!

I have assembled a list of subscription holdings from four comparable Branch Campus libraries: UNM Taos, UNM Valencia, NMSU Alamorgordo, and ENMU Roswell. From their lists I put together a 80+ title list containing both scholarly titles which we all know our students need and popular titles which we all know they want. It is interesting to note that the scholarly titles such as Journal of (fill in the blank) are utilized by 10 to 40 users, popular titles such as Rolling Stone (573) or People (1305) in the branch campus settings. Hey POPULAR vs SCHOLARLY, go figure.

At any rate, with your assistance I hope to glean 25-30 titles from the list for purchase.

Another note, Periodical collections can evolve into real curse!
They always grow larger, more expensive in terms of resources both space, $'s, and personnel and individual titles are difficult to suspend once they are acquired.

So with this in mind please checkout my list and respond with:

1. Titles you yourself subscribe to (would refer to in class)
2. would be of use to your students in fulfilling your assignments
3. titles that you would actually come to the library and read yourself.

Finally there is also room for you to propose any essential title that may have been overlooked to this point.
